My solar installer went out of business. Now what?

Your panels are still on the roof, but the company that put them there is gone. Here’s what usually happens to your warranties, what to do first, and California contractors who say they’ll work on systems they didn’t install.

Your panels still work

The installer closing doesn’t switch your system off. You need a new company for repairs, monitoring issues, or roof work.

Two warranties, two fates

The installer’s labor warranty usually ends with the company. The maker’s equipment warranty often doesn’t[9][10].

Many contractors say no

Lots of installers won’t touch a system they didn’t install. The 36 checked companies here say on their own sites that they will.

Lease or PPA? Different path

If you don’t own the system, whoever now holds your contract may be responsible. For SunPower and Sunnova that’s often SunStrong[4][5].

Pink Energy (Power Home Solar) closed in 2022 but mostly served the Southeast; none of the California contractors we checked name it, so it has no page yet. Use the list below.

What to do, in order

  1. Find your paperwork: contract, permit, and the brands of your panels, inverter and battery (on the labels or in the monitoring app).
  2. Look up the company: was it bought, or did it file bankruptcy? Our brand pages above link the official notices.
  3. Lease, PPA or loan? Call the company you pay each month first.
  4. Check the maker’s warranty for failed equipment — the maker may cover the part even though the installer is gone[9][10].
  5. Get control of your monitoring account. Some installers keep it; one listed contractor says it can transfer the Enphase Enlighten account to you[2].
  6. Hire a licensed contractor and check the license at the CSLB[1].

Have this ready before you call

  • Your contract or install paperwork (it names the installer and what the warranties cover)
  • Brand and model of panels and inverter — on the equipment labels or in your monitoring app
  • Rough number of panels and your roof type (tile, shingle, metal)
  • What stopped working, and when (photos of error lights help)
  • Lease, PPA or loan? Know who you pay each month
